Community Needs Grants 2021

Deadline: August 6, 2021 at 4:00 pm EDT

The Canadian Women’s Foundation is now accepting proposals for Community Needs grants. We will select approximately 23 grants up to a maximum of $20,000 each.

In response to pressure the COVID-19 pandemic has been putting on gender justice and women’s organizations, the Foundation is launching a new annual grant stream designed to provide one year of flexible funding to organizations to meet a range of needs. Applicants may apply for funds to cover program costs and/or operational expenses, such as covering staff salaries or relief staff, adapting services for an online environment, piloting a new approach, etc. Proposals will be expected to demonstrate how the funds will be used and how that spending will contribute to efforts to serve women, girls, Two Spirit, trans, and non-binary people in their communities.

To be considered for a Community Needs Grant, you must demonstrate the following:

  • Significant experience offering programs and/or services or leading advocacy initiatives with/for women, girls, Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people who face multiple barriers and are underserved, including:
    • First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples
    • Black peoples
    • Racialized peoples
    • 2SLGBTQI+ peoples
    • Refugee, immigrant, or non-status peoples
    • People with disabilities
    • People living in rural, remote, or northern communities
    • People living on low incomes
    • Older peoples
    • Young people
  • Provide programs and/or services or lead advocacy initiatives that align with one or more of the Foundation’s funding pillars:
    • Gender-Based Violence: Organizations that support women, Two Spirit, trans, and non-binary people, and their children, who have experienced violence, been coerced into sexual and/or labour exploitation, or that work towards violence prevention with teens.
    • Economic Security: Organizations that aim to improve employability and economic possibilities for women, Two Spirit, trans, and non-binary people living with low incomes, or who are unemployed or underemployed.
    • Girls’ Empowerment: Organizations that support girls, Two Spirit, trans, and non-binary youth aged 9-13 years through group activities, in girls-only settings, that empower and build a sense of belonging among participants.
    • Inclusive Leadership: Organizations that support women, girls, Two Spirit, trans, and non-binary people in developing their leadership skills and provide practical opportunities to hone these skills.
  • Must have valid charitable number from Canada Revenue Agency or be a First Nation that is designated by Canada Revenue Agency as a qualified donee or be working with a partner who fits this eligibility requirement.

Interested organizations are invited to submit a full proposal using the online form including budget and partner letters.

The submission deadline is Friday, August 6, 2021 at 4:00pm EDT. Proposals submitted after this date will not be considered.

Please note that we will only accept one application per organization in this grant stream. If Canadian Women’s Foundation has funded your organization previously, you may reapply, but note that we do not fund the same initiative more than three times.
