Director of Communications
Job summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Communications contributes to increasing awareness and recognition of the Humanity & Inclusion (HI) brand across Canada. He or she implements HI Canada’s communications strategy and activities in conjunction with the Digital Officer. He or she writes, adapts, translates and disseminates communications materials aimed at Humanity & Inclusion’s various audiences in Canada, i.e. journalists, supporters and donors, Canadian funders, Canadian NGOs. The Director of Communications will work closely with colleagues in Canada (Montreal and Ottawa) as well as with the HI Federation communications teams in Lyon and other national offices (USA, Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, UK).
Main tasks and responsibilities:
Awareness campaigns and advocacy
- Coordinate the roll-out of the advocacy campaign to strengthen its resonance in
Canada with our fight to stop the use of explosive weapons in populated areas and
protect civilians.
Media relations
- Identify, develop and maintain relationships with media representatives by
proposing relevant topics and angles.
- Develop, adapt and send press releases, statements, opinion letters, press kits to
media representatives or any other media material from the HI Federation.
- Assist the Executive Director, who acts as spokesperson for Humanity & Inclusion
Canada, in preparing media interviews.
- Develop and promote effective key messages in line with HI Federation’s
positioning.
- Coordinate interviews between media representatives and HI spokesperson or field
staff.
- Manage and update the media contacts database (Agility).
- Update the press review throughout the year.
Digital communication
- Work closely with the Digital Officer to feed the editorial calendar with material
produced by the HI Federation (photos, videos, testimonies, articles), as well as to
create more Canadian content for social media.
- Help optimize the website to meet the needs and expectations of the organization’s
priority audiences (donors, funders, media representatives).
- Participate in the conception and distribution of newsletters to Humanity &
Inclusion Canada supporters and donors.
- Contribute to the launch of digital fundraising campaigns during humanitarian
emergencies to encourage the generosity of new and existing donors to Humanity &
Inclusion Canada and to support the actions of our teams in the field.
- Develop a digital marketing strategy and advertising campaigns to renew and grow
the donor base.
Events
- Plan and organize events to raise awareness and mobilize Canadians around
disability, accessibility and inclusion issues in countries where Humanity &
Inclusion is active.
- Promote events to media representatives, partners and networks with which the
organization is affiliated.
Management and leadership
- Supervise the Digital Officer in day-to-day tasks.
- Participate in various communications committees within HI Federation and the
various networks with which the organization is affiliated.
- Lead Humanity & Inclusion Canada’s Communications Committee, which brings
together board members with expertise in the field.
Other tasks
- Manage the annual communications budget.
- Write and translate printed communications tools (annual reports, posters and
flyers).
- Communicate directly with suppliers and follow up.
- Order promotional items if needed.
Skills and qualities
- University degree in communications or related field.
- At least 7 to 10 years’ professional experience in communications, public affairs,
press relations or marketing.
- Experience in international cooperation is an asset.
- Excellent written and oral skills in English and French (knowledge of another
language is an asset).
- Proficiency in Office suite software and good knowledge of the following
tools/software: WordPress or Wix, Canva, Photoshop, In Design, MailChimp, Agora
Pulse, Google Analytics.
- Attention to detail and rigor, organizational skills, initiative, adaptability, ability to
work alone or as part of a team, ability to work on several projects at the same time.
