Finance Director

The Canadian Association for Global Health (CAGH) brings together a vibrant global health community working to create a healthier and more equitable world. CAGH is a member-based not-for-profit organization whose action on health equity and the social determinants of health in Canada and worldwide is rooted in collaborative research, learning, advocacy, policy, and practice. CAGH is the outcome of the 2021 amalgamation of the Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) and the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) and builds on our more than 60 years of combined history, leadership, and action. CAGH is governed by a Board of Directors, elected by the CAGH membership.

CAGH also houses the Secretariat for Health Systems Global (HSG) – a Society with a diverse global membership that connects the health systems research, policy, and practice communities toward health system development. HSG is governed by a Board of Directors, elected by the HSG membership.

CAGH seeks a Finance Director to cover for a maternity leave. The Finance Director leads the Association’s financial reporting, budgeting and analysis function. The Finance Director is responsible for managing and safeguarding the organization’s assets, functioning as focal point for CAGH and HSG audits, implementing internal controls and updates of financial policies and manuals. The position requires a detail-oriented individual who can prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work collaboratively with staff and members.

Job Description                                                         

Position Title:                         Finance Director

Reporting To:                         Executive Director, CAGH

Work Location:                     Canada Remote (Eastern Time Zone)

Contract duration:                50 weeks, starting from May 22nd, 2023.

Level of Effort:                      An average of 4 days per week

Compensation range for contract duration: $90,000-$100,000

Major duties and responsibilities:

CAGH Finance and Accounting

  1. Safeguarding the assets of the organization.
  2. Overseeing daily accounting process, reviewing balance sheet of CAGH routinely.
  3. Preparing annual audit working papers, statements, and documents.
  4. Preparing regular financial reports to management and the Board.
  5. Monitoring cash flows, recommending for operational adjustments in collaboration with the Accounting Coordinator.
  6. Regularly reviewing AP and AR accounts, in collaboration with the Accounting Coordinator.
  7. Monitoring domestic and international bank accounts.
  8. Overseeing bank reconciliations in collaboration with the Accounting Coordinator.
  9. Cash management in CAD or in other currencies as needed in collaboration with the Accounting Coordinator.
  10. Developing and monitoring annual budget for CAGH.
  11. Supporting budget development for proposals.
  12. Preparing monthly project spending vs budget reports, and interim and final reports for projects.
  13. Developing and updating financial policies.
  14. Training staff in financial accountability and reporting, as needed.
  15. Implementing and verifying internal controls, financial reporting, and financial oversight processes.
  16. Supervising procurement process.
  17. Reviewing supplier/ vendor contracts and documents.
  18. Preparing invoices in collaboration with Accounting Coordinator.
  19. Maintaining banking relationship.
  20. Other duties as required.

HSG Finance and Accounting

  1. Budgeting and monitoring of HSG Budget vs Actuals.
  2. Bank transfers and account reconciliations.
  3. Bookkeeping (in USD).
  4. Preparing internal and management reports.
  5. Supporting various Board Committees and Working Groups on financial matters (Fundraising Committee, Thematic Working Groups, Symposium Working Group)
  6. Organizing quarterly meetings with Board Finance and Audit Committee.
  7. Supervising procurement process.
  8. Reviewing supplier/ vendor contracts and documents Leading quarterly Board reporting.
  9. Daily support for financial matters to HSG Executive Director and staff members (Invoicing, answering to queries, etc.)
  10. Budgeting, monitoring, and reporting for grants.
  11. Supporting 2024 Health Research Symposium organization.
  12. Supporting the organization’s financial audit and reporting.
  13. Other duties, as needed.

CAGH and HSG Personnel

  1. Oversee contracts and JDs for all staff – new contracts and renewals.
  2. Introduce personnel policies to new staff members.
  3. Prepare and monitor Staff Timesheets.
  4. Working with the ED and program management, identify means to effectively implement programs and project while minimising administrative costs.
  5. Prepare and ensure staff, D&O and Office Insurance packages.
  6. Other duties as required.

CAGH National and Provincial Governments reporting

  1. Ensure filing of Annual Registered Charity Information Return to CRA.
  2. Annual Registration updates to Corporations Canada.
  3. Responding to queries from government agencies. Other reports as needed.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting and/ or Management
  • Master’s Degree (asset)


  • 5+ years of financial reporting to funders for non-profit organizations.
  • 5+ years of preparing, reviewing, analyzing financial reports to project and organization managers, and to the board of directors.
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel (will be tested)
  • Good knowledge of MS Office Suite, Google documents, etc.
  • Proven experience in:
    • budget preparations,
    • currency exchange operations,
    • audit,
    • contract review,
    • employee contracting,
    • procurement, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently as part of a team, with a commitment to meeting deadlines and achieving results.
  • Excellent written, oral and comprehension skills in English. Fluency in French is an important asset.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.
