IYAFP Canada Chapter Member

The International Youth Alliance for Family Planning (IYAFP), founded in 2015, is a for youth, by youth, international global alliance made up of 80 chapters around the globe with a united focus on raising the awareness and understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights. IYAFP also focuses on advocacy, accountability, community development, creation of opportunities, and sustainable capacity building for youth. IYAFP has held partnerships with the Youth Health and Rights Coalition, the Population Reference Bureau, the Family Planning 2020 Secretariat, the International Conference on Family Planning, the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health, as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health.

Founded in 2018, IYAFP Canada’s first active year as a youth collective launched in 2020. Since then, we have collaborated with organizations including: Action Canada, CanWaCH, the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health, UN Women, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the World Health Organization, the United States Agency for International Development, Save the Children, and Youth Coalition. As a result, our work is divided between domestic and global advocacy for the greater inclusion of young people in SRHR spaces.

Chapter members are instrumental in the creation, development, and implementation of the country chapter and its deliverables. Chapter members have the opportunity to continue to advance the mission of IYAFP Canada, utilizing each individuals’ skills to create, shape, and advocate for meaningful SRHR initiatives. No previous experience is necessary – all that is required is a passion to learn and the desire to advance SRHR across the country. Applicants must encompass a critical feminist, sex-positive, anti-racist, anti-colonial and equity-focused approach. IYAFP Canada is an unpaid, volunteer position. That being said, the chapter works diligently to seek out various funding opportunities to provide honoraria for its members.

The 2021 / 2022 chapter cycle will begin in September, 2021, and run until June, 2022. Chapter members will be required to attend one chapter meeting per month, based on a date and time that is accessible for each member. Chapter members may also be required to attend additional meetings depending on ongoing event or project planning. Members can anticipate upwards of 10 hours per month towards IYAFP Canada-related initiatives.

We are currently recruiting 7 individuals for the following committees:

  • 1 member for the Networking and Fundraising sub-committee;
  • 2 members for the Policy and Advocacy sub-committee;
  • 1 member for the Education and Outreach sub-committee;
  • 1 member as the Co-Operations Coordinator; and,
  • 2 members for the Communications sub-committee.
