Northern Canada Program Manager

VWB/VSF Canada is looking for a dynamic and action-oriented Program Manager for the Northern Canada Animal Health Initiative, who will be reporting directly to the Executive Director and who will oversee all program activities undertaken by VWB/VSF Canada in Northern Canada.

VWB/VSF’s 2020-2025 strategic plan aims to enhance the organization’s work through four strategic directions:

  1. Improve the lives of people in vulnerable/marginalized communities, including those in crisis, by delivering effective programs using a One Health approach that address contextual challenges, especially gender equality and climate change.
  2. Progress from a pilot project to a Canadian Program operating successfully in several northern communities.
  3. Strengthen financial sustainability through revenue growth and diversification in order to enhance capacity for core functions and allocation of adequate resources for business development.
  4. Enhance visibility among the Canadian veterinary and animal health communities, the general public, government entities and local and international NGOs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development & Implementation
  • Operationalize the Northern Program strategic plan alongside the Executive Director
  • Manage the Northern Program budget alongside the Finance Director
  • Represent VWB/VSF Canada towards external partners
  • Build and develop sustainable long-term relationships with key partners involved in animal and community health in northern Canada who will jointly develop programming
  • Manage the VWB/VSF clinic coordinator to plan and roll out the annual veterinary clinics in the Northern Communities
  • Plan and manage the annual summit and workshops
  • Develop a monitoring and evaluation framework and ensure that the stated indicators are collected
  • Prepare internal and external reports for VWB/VSF Canada donors and key stakeholders, expenditure plans and operational updates
  • Forecast, on a monthly basis, project planning, and update team on a weekly basis on the planning and achievements of program activities
Resource Development
  • Alongside the Executive Director, identify, build, and develop donor base
  • Support the development and submission of proposals
  • Alongside the Executive Director, manage and foster the relationships with donors and corporate sponsors
  • Manage grant administration for Northern grants, grant reporting and compliance calendar.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential
  • 2+years experience in non-profit organization in a managerial role
  • Experience in external representation, coordination and working at the community level
  • Experience in program cycle management, including program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
  • Skills in budget management and donor reporting/accountability/compliance
  • You are pragmatic and results oriented, creative and an out of the box thinker, and you have proven ability to work independently under pressure with tight deadlines
  • You are flexible and able to adapt quickly
  • You are able to manage competing priorities and programs of large size and scope
  • You have strong communication skills
  • Familiarity/experience with northern community life and/or training in Canadian Indigenous history
  • You are culturally sensitive
Preferred
  • Experience living and working in with remote northern Canadian communities
  • Familiarity with the One Health concept
