Part-time Fund Development Officer -1 year contract with the possibility of becoming permanent after 1 year

Ethiopiaid Canada is an Ottawa based international development organization which opened its doors in 2009 with a small staff and big ambition. Our vision is an Ethiopia where every person has the opportunity to live a healthy and productive life. Ethiopiaid raises funds to support several local partner organizations across Ethiopia.  We support projects ranging from maternal health, FGM and women’s rights, to education, disability and disaster responses. It is our aim to see an Ethiopia without preventable poverty, in which every person enjoys the right to quality education, healthcare and a life of dignity.

Outline and Purpose of Role

This position will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Fundraising Committee and volunteers to ensure that income streams (direct mail, major gifts, events, etc.) existing and new, are managed appropriately and effectively. You will be responsible for making sure that our administration processes run smoothly, that donor records are accurate, and that our supporters are communicated with and thanked properly. You will assist with the direct mail program and will also be responsible for processing donations. You will assist the ED with various tasks, including website management and digital fundraising.

Main areas of responsibility:

Fundraising

  • Maintain and execute a strategy to acquire new donors
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, execute a donor recognition strategy with achievable and measurable fundraising targets
  • Develop an annual giving strategy plan in collaboration with the Executive Director 
  • Ensures programs are executed with a multi-channel approach and considers, email, social media & digital fundraising tactics, in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Participates in the budget development process and sets annual fundraising goals and targets

Direct mail

  • Assist in the planning and execution of multiple Direct Mail and online appeal campaigns each year from conception to completion (content, design, data segmentation, list creation, liaison with printers and mailing)
  • Increase direct mail appeal revenue by improving content through testing, expanding different segments, and other creative ways to reach donors

Donor stewardship

  • Plan and execute donor stewardship activities, including welcoming new donors, thanking donors, and supporting monthly, major, and legacy donors.
  • Create and manage tailored programs to nurture key donor segments

Events

  • Plan and execute events, including donor appreciation and community events
  • Provide support to existing and third-party fundraising initiatives

Administration

  • Promptly process and deposit donations, send out new donors packages, process tax receipts
  • Support the management of the donor database (Salesforce)
  • Analyze and report on fundraising revenue results, ROI
  • Monitor Ethiopiaid Canada’s general email inbox, ensuring that emails are responded to or are directed to the appropriate person.
  • Create and update spreadsheets to track information such as new donors, monthly donor retention, grant applications, donor stewardship, etc. 

Communications

  • Support the development of an overall social media strategy and plan
  • Update, manage and enact the organization’s social media plan across multiple platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, website blog)
  • Plan and produce Annual newsletter and E-Newsletter 
  • Plan and produce Ethiopiaid Canada’s Annual Report (print and digital)
  • Manage and update content on Ethiopiaid Canada’s website and contribute to site redesign

Other tasks as required, including but not limited to:

  • Volunteer Management and Engagement
  • Support organizational administration, including attending Fundraising Committee Meetings, Sister to Sister meetings, the occasional Board Meeting, ensuring accurate record keeping, and performing various administrative tasks such as filing and general office duties

Qualifications and experience

Must have’s

  • Two to four years of experience of working in a fundraising position
  • Fund development experience is required for this position
  • Strong and demonstrated experience in writing and planning Direct Mail 
  • Experience with Salesforce or similar software
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a busy environment managing multiple projects, shifting priorities, and tight deadlines.
  • Experience in, or an interest in, International Development and the charity sector more broadly
  • Good knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Office, Google suite, Excel 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Proven ability to manage relationships and work with a range of people

Nice to have:

  • Experience of, or an interest in, developing charity content for social media
  • Experience in gift processing, tax receipting, etc.
  • Experience overseeing telemarketing and campaigns.
  • French would be an asset
  • Graphic Design experience

Work Environment

  • Willingness to work flexible hours—some after-hours work may be required.
  • Working remotely during COVID-19 is supported and encouraged. Under more regular circumstances, work occurs at the office (484 Gladstone Ave, in Ottawa) with some flexibility to work remotely. (The position is three days per week and at least one of these days needs to be worked from the office, the other two can be worked remotely) Hours are typically 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday, but there is definitely room for flexibility. 

*This is a part-time (24 hours per week) contract position to the end of August 2022 with a chance for the role to become permanent after the contract. Salary for this position is in the range of $33,000-$36,000, dependent on level of experience. 

*A $75 per month health spending amount will be provided in place of benefits
