CARE is one of the world’s leading multi-mandate aid agencies, fighting poverty and injustice in over 100 countries around the world. As an organization dedicated to addressing the underlying causes of poverty and social injustice, CARE is a serious advocate for an urgent, effective, and equitable response to climate change. This includes an ambitious commitment by CARE to adopt practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are causing climate change, as well as to tackle environmental injustices, especially for vulnerable groups such as women and indigenous peoples, under a new standalone Climate Justice impact area (CARE Vision 2030), including a Climate Justice Strategy and its dedicated set of programmatic indicators to report on. Under CARE International’s Climate Justice Strategy (2030), the whole CARE Confederation (including CARE Canada) will work on climate change.
CARE Canada is committed to reducing its own carbon footprint by introducing and continuing to implement concrete environmentally sound actions as well as improving the resilience of its programmatic work in the face of future climate change-related effects. In the development of CARE Canada’s Strategic Plan, From Caring Comes Courage, the organization has committed itself to “Unlocking Her Leadership for a Gender-Just Future” by prioritizing safety, health, and livelihoods, with a focus on women’s leadership at the centre. The Strategic Plan recognizes climate change as an important challenge that should be seen as a crucial cross-cutting issue.
CARE Canada’s Senior Environment and Climate Change Advisor will provide specialist knowledge, technical expertise and relationship building skills to define and deliver CARE Canada’s ambition to reduce its carbon footprint and to enhance resilient capacity for smallholders, other vulnerable people, and health systems in relation to environmental and disaster risks. The postholder will lead internal workplace greening initiatives, strategy development, program development and implementation, and policy change and advocacy work. The role will work closely with other colleagues and functions to mainstream environment responses to programming, measure the results/impacts and contribute to sharing and learning within CARE Canada, CARE International and with external stakeholders.
The Senior Environment and Climate Change Advisor will be responsible for increasing the profile and recognition of CARE. They will lead and coordinate the integration of climate change and resilience across CARE Canada’s development and humanitarian work, working closely with CARE Canada staff, as well as with CARE Country Offices and potentially other local organisations in the Global South to better consider and address environment risks in programming, leading to increased impact. The postholder will also contribute to specific climate-related policy and advocacy initiatives, as well as supporting colleagues to consider the environment in CARE’s other advocacy work. Key areas of work are likely to include adaptation, mitigation, loss and damage, climate finance, biodiversity conservation, nature-based solutions, and natural resource management. Capacity building for CARE staff will be another strong focus of the role, including training and on-the-job support to roll out CARE’s flagship tools and guidance (including Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Analysis Tools, Integrated Risk Management Checklist, Community-Based Adaptation Framework, Adaptation Good Practice Checklist, Local Adaptation Planning Handbook, Participatory Scenario Planning Handbook, Gender-inclusive Actionable Agro-advisories Checklist, and Climate Change Advocacy Toolkit) and external and donor tools and guidance (ex. Global Affairs Canada’s Environmental Assessment, Environmental Management Plan, Environmental Integration Process, etc.).
They will plan, implement, and track the results of CARE Canada’s internal workplace greening initiatives, including a strategic KPI. Over the past 7 years, staff and management have been taking self-mandated concrete actions to reduce the organization’s negative environmental impact and encourage climate-smart practices. During this process, an informal self-led “Green Team” emerged. The postholder will formalize and lead this group as a formal Green Matrix Team, to educate, inspire and empower employees on practical ways to reduce environmental impact, work to identify and implement specific solutions to help CARE Canada operate in a more environmentally sustainable fashion, and to increase the resilience of our programmatic work in the face of future climate change-related effects.
The Senior Environment and Climate Change Advisor must be passionate about the environment, resilience, the interlinkages between gender and climate justice, and localized solutions and southern collective voices and actions on climate justice issues.
