POSITION: SENIOR WRITER AND EDITOR

STATUS: 1.0 FTE

PLACE OF WORK: Virtual, Canada-based

REPORTING TO: Director of Stakeholder Engagement

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Writer and Editor is responsible for building and maintaining the ‘voice’ of the organization by crafting and editing major publications, opinion pieces, blogs, emails, media collateral and executive speaking notes for the organization, among other materials. The Senior Writer and Editor will work closely with the Director of Stakeholder Engagement to develop and deliver high-quality written content to support the organization’s objectives, including for member engagement, stakeholder (government and funder) engagement, events and public engagement activities.

The Senior Writer and Editor will:

  • Develop and deliver clear, concise and compelling written content and communications material including the organization’s annual report, special reports, articles, blogs, briefing notes, executive speaking notes, member news updates, media outreach and more by leveraging superior writing skills and keen understanding of audiences and communications platforms.
  • Draft persuasive content that advances the organization’s strategic activities and projects, including the influencing of global health sector policy and investments, gender equality initiatives, and engaging the Canadian public in our work.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage key moments (emerging issues, news, international and national days, events, etc.) to amplify the voice and messaging of CanWaCH and its members with timely, relevant written content.
  • Refine and enhance the written work of team members across the organization through strong editing and copywriting abilities.
  • Function as an integral, collaborative member of the communications team in the delivery of a variety of written content to multiple audiences on behalf of the organization. This includes supporting the drafting and editing of creative social media copy, (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram), with the experience needed to occasionally post on these channels and monitor engagement to provide back up support to the Communications Officer.  
  • Ensure all communications align with CanWaCH’s brand guidelines and messaging.
  • Remain up to date on industry best practices and trends to ensure that CanWaCH’s written assets are at the forefront of the field.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Proven excellence in writing and editing, with the experience and ability to adapt writing style and tone for different audiences and platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with writing and posting social media copy for an organization with a good understanding of social media analytics tools, Google analytics and search engine optimization.
  • Strong project management and coordination skills with a proven ability to deliver high-quality writing projects on time.
  • Demonstrated ability to confidently liaise with external organizations, vendors and other stakeholders and to build relationships and collaborate with communications professionals across an industry or sector, moderating opportunities to amplify common messaging.
  • General understanding of media outreach and how to maximize exposure to multiple audiences.
  • Self-reflection and ability to navigate differences in opinion and difficult conversations
  • Demonstrated sense of humour
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that ensure you are able to successfully and diplomatically negotiate the revision and editing processes with colleagues.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and complex environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize priorities, multi-task, take initiative and work independently.

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • The position may require occasional, light evening and weekend work to support important, emerging developments on digital media channels or events.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Bilingual (French and English)
  • Familiarity with the Canadian non-profit sector and/or global health sector is a strong asset.
  • Experience using design software and platforms and WordPress.
  • Familiarity with social media management and customer relationship management (CRM) software.
  • Experience in a member-based association or organization is an asset.
  • Experience in the international development sector is an asset.
