Description


This project aims to improve women’s economic empowerment by increasing social and economic participation of women in 36 districts of Takhar, Baghlan and Bamiyan provinces of Afghanistan. The project increases awareness to gain support of communities for gender equality by improving the capacity of community and government institutions. Activities include: (1) training women in market-driven vocational skills, business management and entrepreneurship; (2) establishing and training Community Based Savings Groups; (3) holding literacy classes for women and establishing libraries; (4) conducting gender-sensitive governance training for District Governors’ offices; and (5) training employees of the Department of Women’s Affairs in the promotion of women’s empowerment, gender equality and project management.

Results & Indicators


Expected Results


The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased participation of women in public life; and (2) increased integration of women into the economy.

Achieved Results


Results achieved as of March 2018 include: (1) community awareness about gender equality and women’s empowerment was increased through district development assemblies, community development councils and community advisory boards, which engaged local government, traditional and religious leaders and women; (2) 19 Community Advisory Boards were established in three regions, which helped facilitate and gain community approval of social awareness campaigns of girls’ right to education and women’s participation in social and economic spaces; (3) community engagement was achieved on women’s rights issues, including inheritance rights, and on violence against women, through in-person consultations and 34 province-wide radio-shows; (4) completed the construction/rehabilitation and furnishing of 25 women’s public spaces at the District Governor’s Offices, which increased women’s access to services by 300 to 500% in these offices; (5) established 300 new Community-Based Savings Groups (CBSGs) comprised of 4,724 members (of which 4,147 women); (6) held 24 women-to-women networking events for women entrepreneurs, during which women entrepreneurs secured nine business contracts with a total value of $17,000 CAD; and (7) established 48 farmer field schools in agriculture, that trained 2,891 farmers (of which 2,513 women) on improved, higher-yielding and climate-resilient techniques, including beekeeping and orchard management, resulting in increased yields and incomes for farmers, most participants reported a 50-70% increase in income from agricultural products. These results, amongst others, have contributed to increasing social and economic participation of Afghan women in Takhar, Baghlan and Bamyan provinces.
