Description


This project expands and improves the availability and the quality of early childhood development in 14 rural communities in Burkina Faso. Approximately 1,300 adults in caregiving roles, including parents, teachers, pre-school and community workers are trained in the importance of early childhood development and education using the Learning Through Play (LTP) early childhood development methodology developed by Hincks-Dellcrest. Parents/caregivers receive information about the cognitive, socio-emotional, linguistic, and physical aspects of early childhood development of children from birth to 6 years old. This low cost, low-literacy, multicultural approach encourages parental involvement, learning, and parent-child attachment. It has been culturally adapted with respect to illustrations, language, concepts, and values for the local context. The project expects to ultimately impact over 3,000 children by improving the success rates of children in elementary school, reducing gender gap in elementary school enrolment, and improving infant/child health.

Results & Indicators


Expected Results


Results achieved as of the end of the project include: (1) integrated the Early Childhood Development / Learning Through Play (ECD/LTP) approach in the national teacher training curriculum; (2) trained 21 preschool teachers (19 women/2 men) and 93 primary school teachers (32 women/61 men) on LTP and strategies for its implementation in the classroom practice; (3) developed monitoring tools that are being used by 16 school directors and teachers’ supervisors for classroom visits; (4) developed practical tools for the LTP, which are being adopted by 40 trained teacher trainers (6 women/ 34 men); (5) trained 28 community sponsorship animators (20 women/8 men), 112 village management committee members (47 women/65 men) and 13 community health workers to use the LTP/ECD tools to help strengthen local ability to ensure the well-being of young children in these communities; and (6) 958 parents/caregivers (706 women/252 men) (members of 32 parents’ groups) attended regular LTP sessions in which they learned basic tools and knowledge to stimulate their children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth. This contributed to the integration of the ECD/LTP approach to ensure that girls and boys have access to better quality education and support from their parents.

Achieved Results


Results achieved as of May 2013 include: (i) integrating the Early Childhood Development / Learning Through Play (ECD/LTP) approach in the national teacher training curriculum; ( and training 21 preschool teachers (17 women/5 men ) and 93 primary school teachers (32 women/61men) in the ECD/LTP methodology; (iii) developing monitoring tools that are being used by 16 school directors and teachers’ supervisors for classroom visits; (iv) developing practical tools for the LTP, which are being adopted by 40 trained teacher trainers (6 women/ 34 men); (v) training 27 community sponsorship animators (5 women/8 men), 112 village management committee members (47 women/65 men) and 13 community health workers to use the LTP/ECD tools to help strengthen local ability to ensure the well-being of young children in these communities; (vi) 858 parents (members of 31 parents’ groups) are attending regular LTP sessions in which they learn basic tools and knowledge to stimulate their children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth. These results are contributing to integrating the ECD/LTP approach to ensure that girls and boys have access to better quality education and support from their parents.
