Description

Limited resources and the sensitive political context hinder governmental efforts toward change. In addition, it is expected that new conflicts will arise in Syria and the health sector may have to respond to sudden population displacements. In Dohuk, Ninewa and Kirkuk, MdM is preparing for the possible arrival of Kurds from North Syria, more specifically:
– Ninewa governorate: Sinjar region is still facing lack of resources coming from the central level, and access to health remains a challenge especially for displaced populations;
– Ninewa governorate: West Mosul. Populations have returned, but the public health system still struggles to recover. Entire areas of the city still have no access to humanitarian aid.
– Kirkuk governorate: Kirkuk is part of the disputed territories and it is expected that more needs may arise in the coming months.
– Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I): Chamesku camp in Dohuk governorate faces a situation of protracted displacement for the Yezidi population11.
MdM has provided essential PHC services including SRH, MHPSS, referral to secondary level health care, health promotion and community empowerment in the 3 targeted governorates since 2014. MdM has gained the trust of DOH and the communities in the areas of intervention, ensuring the possibility for MdM to start working on more sensitive topics such as GBV. MdM was also supporting some of the most vulnerable ethnic groups, especially Yezidi populations, through the project implemented in Chamesku camp.
