Description

Save the Mothers East Africa launched the Mother Friendly Hospital Initiative (MFHI). This initiative mobilized STM graduates as advocates and advisors for safe motherhood to work in partnership with four pilot hospitals: Mukono Health Centre IV, St. Francis Naggalama Hospital, St. Charles Lwanga Buikwe Hospital, and Kawolo Hospital in Uganda.

Training for this innovative partnership happened in November 2011. Hospital staff and 12 STM graduates attended a three day training session, which included instruction in quality improvement, change management and an introduction to the MFHI assessment tool.

The advisors used the assessment tool to identify gaps and work with hospital staff and other partners to address the gaps in the pilot hospitals. During 2012, the advisors conducted support visits to the pilot centres and these resulted into improvements in the respective sites. Some of the improvements included procuring hospital supplies and equipment, 22 mattresses for the maternity wards and installation of rain water harvest system for one of sites. The support visits also motivated the hospital staff. One midwife said: Your visits make us feel appreciated and this keeps us encouraged to do our work despite the low pay.
