Adopting a health system strengthening approach, the project aims to create an environment conducive to the prevention, timely detection, and treatment of severe acute malnutrition (SAM). It will provide training and on the job support to health facility staff to improve their knowledge and capacity on key nutrition services such as 1000 days as well as treatment of SAM. It will also reach out to communities and promote proper nutrition practices through training and support of community members. Nutrition activities will be complemented with psycho-social support.
The project aims to achieve this conducive environment through i) building capacity of a range of health facilities offering levels of technical response to malnutrition including inpatient and outpatient support; ii) promoting community engagement from gender groups and leaders in nutrition and sanitation activities at community and health facility level while also building community capacity on technical and psychosocial levels; and iii) improving the physical infrastructure of health facilities.
