This project aims to improve and strengthen surveillance and immunization systems through support to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s (GPEI). The goal of the GPEI is to eradicate polio from the planet. CIDA’s support contributes to strategies to address sub-national gaps in surveillance sensitivity in three endemic regions, to ensure certification-standard surveillance is sustained in regions which are polio-free, and to enhance the effectiveness for outbreak response activities. It also contributes to strengthening immunization systems and increasing coverage rates of the full range of classical childhood vaccines, and/or assisting with the delivery of other important child survival interventions such as vitamin A, zinc supplementation and the distribution of anti-malarial bednets.

Return to topCIDA’s contribution is expected to enhance global poliovirus surveillance and outbreak response and strengthen immunization systems.
Key results were achieved by the GPEI between 2012 and 2014; notably, the GPEI successfully introduced the 2013-2019 Strategic Endgame Plan to eradicate polio to key stakeholders and partners. Two of the three endemic areas saw a marked decrease in polio cases between 2012 and 2013: Afghanistan saw a 62% decrease in cases and cases in Nigeria declined by 57%.
