Description

This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). UN Women uses these funds, along with those of other donors, to support its core mandate and functions. UN Women’s mandate is focused on the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action, and peace and security interventions. UN Women works to support global standards for gender equality and helps countries meet these standards by providing expertise and financial support. Canada’s support helps to promote equality between women and men and tackle discrimination against women and girls globally.

Results & Indicators

Expected Results

The expected results for this project include: the adoption of legislation, policies and strategies that strengthen women’s economic empowerment and access to resources, especially for the poorest and most excluded women. These would include constitutional reform, laws and policies that promote women’s inclusion, and gender-responsive electoral management. Intergovernmental and inter-agency results include increased women’s participation in leadership, and greater coherence in policy advice provided to governments to advance women’s leadership. UN Women also promotes greater leadership and participation by women in peace, security, and humanitarian action. Expected results include stronger incorporation of gender-equality commitments in conflict and post-conflict responses, and greater numbers of women in negotiating delegations participating in peace talks. At the global level, expected results include a comprehensive set of global norms, policies and standards on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
