The Canadian Partnership for Women and Children’s Health (CanWaCH) welcomes the Government of Canada’s renewed commitment to global immunization efforts, reinforcing its role as a leader for global health and equality. This additional investment of $675 million over the next five years (2026-2030) will help ensure life-saving vaccines reach the world’s most vulnerable populations, preventing disease, strengthening health systems and improving long-term outcomes for women and children.
For over two decades, Canada has been a trusted partner in the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases, contributing over $1 billion to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, since 2002. This support has helped immunize 1 billion children, saving over 17 million lives. By continuing to invest in global immunization, Canada is building on this legacy, ensuring that millions more children are protected from deadly diseases.
At a time of increasing global uncertainty, Canada’s unwavering commitment to strong global partnerships is more important than ever. Disruptions in global funding threaten to roll back progress, making Canada’s steady leadership essential in ensuring immunization efforts remain strong and sustainable. Immunization is not just a health intervention — it is a driver of equality, economic stability, and sustainable development. Expanding access to vaccines, including HPV vaccines to eliminate cervical cancer, is a crucial step toward improving health outcomes for women and girls worldwide.
As we mark International Women’s Day and this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” this announcement is a testament to Canada’s long-standing dedication to turning promises into impact. Canada has demonstrated that it is a dependable champion of global health — one that steps up when it matters most. CanWaCH applauds this bold step forward and looks forward to working with the government and partners to ensure that every child, everywhere, has access to the vaccines they need to thrive.
