OTTAWA, April 16, 2026 — The Canadian Partnership for Women and Children’s Health (CanWaCH) welcomes today’s announcement of a $190 million pledge from the Government of Canada to the Global Financing Facility (GFF) as an important first step in Canada’s contribution to this replenishment cycle.
This commitment comes at a critical moment for global health. After decades of progress built on strong evidence and proven approaches, child mortality rose in 2025 for the first time this century — driven by escalating conflicts, the impacts of the climate crisis and catastrophic reductions in international assistance across the G7. Without sustained investment and the conditions needed to deliver life-saving services, up to 16 million additional children could die by 2045.
Canada’s pledge sends an important signal. The GFF remains one of the most effective mechanisms for advancing maternal, newborn and child health, strengthening primary health care systems, and improving outcomes for women and adolescents. For every dollar invested, it mobilizes additional financing across international and domestic sources, maximizing impact.
Canada has a strong track record as a consistent global partner in advancing the health and rights of women, children and adolescents. Today’s announcement reflects that continued commitment to evidence-based, high-impact investments that support global stability and prosperity.
As like-minded global partners come together around the GFF’s next replenishment, CanWaCH looks forward to working alongside the Government of Canada and our members to build on this contribution — sustaining momentum and helping ensure life-saving services reach those who need them most.
