Child Marriage Roundtable: Unpacking Gender Violence

Each year, 12 million girls are married before they turn 18. That is 22 girls every minute whose childhood, dreams and education are cut short. The numbers are almost unfathomable: 650 million women and girls alive today were married as children – some organizations put this number as high as 700 million, or just under 10% of the global population.

There are many factors at play when a child ends up in an early or forced marriage. Most commonly, girls from marginalized communities, often in fragile or conflict-affected settings are the most at risk with poverty, gender inequality, tradition, limited access to education and socially normalized perceptions of protection all contributing to what is at its core, a fundamental violation of human rights.
