About Us:
The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With over $40 million per year in research funding, the School supports discovery in global health, tobacco impacts on health, occupational disease and disability, air pollution, inner city and Indigenous health, among many other areas.
Your Opportunity:
As Director, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, you will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing initiatives aimed at advancing equity and diversity across our school. Your deep understanding of complex issues related to EDI will empower you to work collaboratively with our academic, administrative and student leaders to advance awareness and support learning within our broader community, and foster relationships with racialized and marginalized communities across Toronto. As a key advisor, you will provide strategic counsel to our Dean’s executive team and work in close partnership with Equity offices across the University.
Your Responsibilities Will Include:
- Leading the development of the annual faculty strategic diversity plan and contributing to the annual report on EDI activities and the effectiveness of initiatives and overall equity strategic plan
- Identifying trends and providing analyses to the Dean and CAO, identifying systemic barriers and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies
- Deepening DLSPH’s relationship with racialized and marginalized communities across Toronto by navigating complex partnerships with community groups and other partners not usually engaged by DLSPH
- Directing, guiding, and monitoring the DLSPH Outreach and Access Program
- Developing and delivering EDI professional development and educational and mentorship initiatives for all levels of the DLSPH community
Essential Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in public health or a relevant area of study, preferably with a focus on dispute resolution, human rights, diversity, equity and inclusion or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum five years of professional experience (or several years’ progressive experience) in complex institutional organizations, preferably post-secondary education institutions
- Proven experience as an organizational leader, successful record of advancing equity, diversity and inclusion within a complex organization
- Experience with complex report writing at a senior level, leading or facilitating significant organizational change
- Proven success in obtaining cooperation and implementing innovative solutions to complex problems
- Demonstrated experience and competence in developing targeted training to diverse groups
- Experience designing and delivering educational programs, including designing and managing community outreach programs
- Experience developing strategic and operational plans
- Experience working with a diverse student body, community and stakeholder engagement and working with youth
- Experience managing, leading and mentoring staff, preferably in a unionized environment
Skills:
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant law and policy including the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Human Resources Civility Guidelines and Guidelines for Complaints of Prohibited Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment in the context of Higher Education
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues related to race, culture, faith, spirituality, equity and diversity, sexual and gender diversity, the intersectionality of issues of diversity with issues of accessibility, race, religion, culture, and other equity and diversity issues
- Excellent command of contemporary diversity, equity and inclusion concepts, paradigms and issues (e.g., recruitment and retention, access and equity, the educational impact of diversity, policy and legal dynamics of diversity)Ability to critically analyze the range of EDI paradigms, their strengths and limitations, and to articulate these to a diverse audience
- Ability to research, identify and implement best practices of equity, diversity and inclusion
- Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
- Knowledge, skill and experience in mediation, investigations, and group facilitation
- Research, analytical skills (including statistical analysis and interpretation)
- Demonstrated ability to serve as an internal resource and consultant, working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders in a politically sensitive context often complicated by the presence of competing perspectives or interests
- Demonstrated understanding of the elements and dynamics of organizational change
- Ability to manage difficult and emotionally charged interactions
- Demonstrated ability to cross organizational and cultural boundaries with ease, adapting language and style to the context both in person and at a distance
- Demonstrated judgement, sensitivity, analysis and decision-making skills
Assets (Nonessential):
