Executive Director  

Ethiopiaid Canada is a charitable international development organization committed to empowering people in Ethiopia to live healthy and productive lives. We seek lasting change by supporting interventions driven by local partners. At the core of our work is a desire to reduce poverty and improve the lives of those living in poverty by increasing opportunities and resources. Our programming focuses on increasing access to quality maternal health services, reducing barriers to education, and supporting women’s and girls’ empowerment.

Scope of Position

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Ethiopiaid’s management and the execution of its mission. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, fund development, programs, and strategic planning of Ethiopiaid Canada.  Primary duties include fundraising, administration, human resources, program management, Global Affairs project management (alongside a Project Manager) and strategic planning.  

The ideal candidate will have a proven fundraising track record, excellent leadership skills, budget experience, strategic planning abilities, experience in international development, monitoring and evaluation, project management and a history in the non-profit/charitable sector. We are looking for someone with the ability to envision change, lead into the future, and effectively mobilize efforts around poverty alleviation. To succeed in this role, you must thrive in a fast-paced environment with many moving parts and be excited about taking on new challenges. As part of a small team of four, the Executive Director must be a flexible team player who is comfortable working with limited resources and sharing administrative responsibilities.

This is a full time, permanent position in a small but growing organization. Occasional travel to Ethiopia to meet with partners and undertake monitoring and evaluation of the projects is required.

Key Responsibilities

The following tasks provide an overview of the main areas of responsibility for Executive Director:

Organizational Development & Management

  • Develop and implement the organization’s operations and multi-year strategy
  • Ensure coherence among organization’s fundraising, programming, and communications strategies
  • Advise Board of Directors on strategic direction for organization’s sustainability and growth
  • Submit quarterly reports to the Board and attend Board meetings
  • Develop and manage staff (Grants Manager, Project Manager, Fund Development Officer), volunteers, and Board-run committees

Fundraising and Resource Mobilization  

  • Develop and execute a diversified annual fundraising strategy
  • Coordinate, strategize, and implement direct mail campaigns
  • Develop and implement new fundraising streams, including major donors, planned giving, and grants
  • Actively cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, prominent supporters, and the public
  • Support and grow digital fundraising efforts

 Communications and Public Engagement

  • Serve as spokesperson for the organization
  • Develop and manage communications materials for website and social media
  • Launch & manage new website
  • Develop and implement outreach strategy (events, community engagement)
  • Recruit and help to manage volunteer base
  • Ensure effective linkages and communications with external stakeholders
  • Network and look to engage in new partnerships

Financial Management & Accountability  

  • Develop and manage annual budget
  • Develop multi-year financial plans and sustainability plans
  • Ensure efficient and responsible use of the organization’s finances
  • Oversee CRA reporting processes and preparation of annual financial audit
  • Produce the organization’s annual report

Program Management

  • Provide oversight to diverse portfolio of international development projects
  • Oversee the management of the Global Affairs Canada project
  • Provide advisory support to project implementing partners
  • Oversee contractual agreements with field partners and ensure legal compliance
  • Research and assess new projects and implementing partners
  • Monitoring and evaluation of agreements, work plans, reports, and performance (occasional travel to Ethiopia required)
  • Maintain a current understanding of development issues related to projects

Essential Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in fundraising
  • Minimum 1-3 years in international development
  • Experience with budgeting and financial management
  • Some experience in monitoring & evaluation of international development projects
  • Some experience in Global Affairs Canada funding
  • Ability to analyze information, evaluate options and think strategically
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities
  • Excellent computer literacy skills, including MS Word, Excel and web-based systems  
  • A keen eye for detail and comfort working with large amounts of data
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to lead and motivate others
  • Strong communication skills, including gender sensitivity and cross-cultural communication
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of team to achieve results
  • Outstanding work ethic and proven ability to take initiative
  • Ability to wear multiple hats and juggle multiple competing priorities
  • Commitment to Ethiopiaid Canada’s mission and vision

Desirable  

  • Familiarity with best practices in non-profit fundraising and marketing
  • Experience in managing major gifts or planned giving programs
  • Experience in writing grant proposals 
  • Familiarity with social media marketing
  • Familiarity with CRA requirements for charities
  • French language an asset

Position Details: This is a full time (40 hours/week) position based out of our Vanier office. Occasional travel to Ethiopia (1-2 times per year) is required.
