Embracing the power of sport: CanWaCH at WickFest

We spent some of the last weeks of 2024 in Calgary at WickFest! One of the most celebrated hockey events for young girls in the world, the festival embodies the ways sport can unlock leadership, empowerment, health and well-being for girls. Through a series of workshops and installations, including a screening of a young Ugandan athlete’s remarkable story, we worked to blend the worlds of hockey and global awareness so girls come away as better athletes and as young global citizens with a deeper understanding of the world.

Through our partnership with WickFest, we supported the participation of a Ukrainian U13 girls’ hockey team. Consisting of girls from various Ukrainian cities, the team explored the sights and sounds of Calgary, connected with fellow young athletes and took part in a special game honouring community, resilience and the power of sport.

It was inspiring to engage with the next generation of gamechangers through the festival and we’re excited to be joining the next edition in Surrey, B.C., in a few weeks! Four-time Olympic gold-medallist Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser and CanWaCH CEO Julia Anderson reflected on the power of sport in this op-ed
