CanWaCH newsletter September 2025: New resources, ICFP 2025 bursary program and a reading club for all!

Class is almost in session!

The 2025 CanWaCH Academy is quickly approaching! Join us from September 22 to 25 for a range of engaging sessions and trainings designed to help you adapt and respond to a rapidly changing world. From navigating advocacy in a shifting geopolitical landscape to building strategies for impactful storytelling, the Academy will offer timely, skills-based learning to support resilience and strengthen capacity.

As humanitarian needs increase and more members work in fragile and crisis-affected settings, the Academy will also explore how we can collaborate more effectively to support women, children and adolescents in the most challenging contexts.

Apply today! ICFP 2025 CanWaCH delegation bursary program

From November 3 to 6, the global community will gather in Bogotá, Colombia, for the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP). The conference brings together researchers, advocates, policymakers and youth leaders to share knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and advance global commitments to sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender equality.

To support meaningful Canadian participation, CanWaCH is pleased to launch an ICFP 2025 Delegation Bursary program. The program offers a limited number of bursaries to help members engage in this important global forum and bring insights back to strengthen our collective work in Canada.

Integrating environmental considerations into global health programming

It’s been one year since CanWaCH’s landmark Healthy World Conference explored the intersection of climate, gender and global health, and we heard calls for better integration and coordination across these sectors. Explore the powerful insights from this gathering in our Reflection on Conversations at the Healthy World Conference summary

One of the clear calls for CanWaCH was to support the development of robust technical guidance for global health partners seeking to better integrate environment considerations in their work. We are therefore delighted to share the newest edition in our technical guidance series: Technical Guidance Note: The Integration of Climate, Gender Equality and Health into Programming in Development and Humanitarian Contexts.

Registration opens for our French gender equality training

CanWaCH is thrilled to announce the next French offering of our virtual gender equality training sessions! This training is designed to build the confidence and capacity of the CanWaCH membership in delivering gender transformative health programming. Through a series of three modules, delivered across five sessions, participants will learn how to integrate gender transformative approaches into their work.

Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT on  October 21, 22, 24, 28 and 31. Please only register if you can commit to all dates and times. Share with your Francophone colleagues!

Where will you be this fall?

As we head into a busy fall and winter, we need your help to capture a snapshot of CanWaCH member plans and activities from now through International Development Week.  Our two minute survey asks you which major events you are planning to attend and which days of observance are most important to your organization. If your plans aren’t confirmed — that’s ok! Please complete it to the best of your ability.

As you finalize your fall plans, don’t forget to save the date for the CanWaCH AGM on November 17!

Watch your inbox: CanWaCH membership renewal begins October 1

The new CanWaCH membership year begins on October 1, 2025! Watch your inbox for a renewal invoice sent via Glue Up, on September 30. Per our policies, your annual CanWaCH membership renews automatically and your organization will be issued an invoice, payable in advance of our Annual General Meeting in November.

Read, gather and reflect with Partners in Health!

Partners In Health Canada is launching the Doing Hard Things With Friends Reading Club: a space to gather around short essays, speeches and reflections that spark conversation about global health, solidarity and what care really means. Participants receive a short reading in advance, then join a 60–90 minute guided conversation. Sessions are offered both in person (Toronto) and online (Zoom).

Everyone is welcome! Students, health workers, justice-curious folks and members of the global health community.

Join the SRHR conversation this September

September marks several moments connected to sexual health and reproductive rights (SRHR), including World Sexual Health Day, World Contraception Day, International Safe Abortion Day and Gender Equality Week. CanWaCH and the Inter-Agency Working Group (IAWG) on Reproductive Health in Crises have prepared an English and French social media toolkit for our members to use on their social media channels throughout the month.

A warm welcome to the newest CanWaCH members!

We’re excited to welcome the Public Health Association of British Columbia and the Ingram School of Nursing to the CanWaCH membership

Through advocacy, collaboration, education and research, the Public Health Association of BC provides leadership to promote health, well-being and social equity. A voluntary, non-profit and member-driven charity organization, their work spans the spectrum of public health practice, including prevention, promotion, protection and policy.

A department at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Ingram School of Nursing seeks to educate current and future nurses, advance the art and science of nursing through impactful research, and optimize health and health equity globally through academic excellence, impactful research, strengths-based nursing and innovation.

Data matters: Navigating the changing global health data landscape

The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program has been a cornerstone of the global health data ecosystem for nearly four decades. With the abrupt termination of its funding earlier this year, there is an urgent need for the global community to assess and address the implications of this gap and chart a sustainable way forward for generating and making available critical health data.

Following virtual consultations engaging hundreds of Canadian and global partners, CanWaCH is pleased to share the following resource which provides background context, useful insights, relevant links and calls to action for the sector.
