In review: CanWaCH at UNGA 79

The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79) took place in New York City from September 10 to 30. CanWaCH was in attendance during the high-level week which began with the Summit of the Future. This summit gathered heads of state to address pressing global challenges and reaffirm commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One pivotal session featured Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados, addressing the impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) on both slow- and fast-moving pandemics. The session highlighted the critical role of data tracking and education in raising awareness about the looming threats of AMR, particularly in an already fragile global landscape.

CanWaCH also co-hosted a side event, “Choose Choice”, in partnership with MSI Reproductive Choices, the Government of Canada, SheDecides, FP2030 and the Government of Nepal. This event brought together global leaders and members of civil society organizations to reaffirm and celebrate a shared commitment to reproductive choice. During the event, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, announced funding for projects focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

We were pleased to conclude our time in New York with a member dinner, bringing together partners and members from organizations such as  Action Against Hunger, RESULTS Canada, Equitas, Habitat for Humanity, Grand Challenges Canada, Amref Canada and MSI Reproductive Choices. The gathering provided an opportunity for members to connect, share insights from the sessions they attended and discuss their collective work.

What we heard during the 2024 Global Health Impact Summit

On May 13, CanWaCH hosted its second Global Health Impact Summit in Montréal, Quebec. Centered around the theme of Rising Tides: Measuring climate impacts on the health and rights of communities in crisis, the event gave invited participants the opportunity to listen, share and learn from each other’s work. Presentations featured 15 active projects exploring gender and climate impacts as part of their monitoring and evaluation processes, with the ultimate aim to advance health and rights.

Expand your skills as a gender equality trainer

Join us for a 3-day facilitation training this November! Held in French, the training is designed to strengthen the capacity of participants to facilitate training sessions within their organizations, particularly gender equality training sessions. Participants will also benefit from one-on-one feedback and coaching sessions to bolster their facilitation skills. Please note that space is limited and registrations will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Click here for more information and to register. Contact Deborah at [email protected] for any questions.

Sector moments: World Mental Health Day and World Sight Day

Today marks World Mental Health Day, an important opportunity to raise awareness and galvanize global support for mental health. It also offers a timely opportunity to reflect on how gender equality and health programs can better address mental health needs, and ensure that mental health care is not just an afterthought, but a priority in both development and emergency settings around the world. Check out this blog from Plan International Canada and the Canadian Red Cross on integrating mental health into sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Today also marks World Sight Day, a day to focus the world’s attention on the issues of blindness and vision impairment. This year’s campaign shines the spotlight on children’s eye health. Without eye care, children lose out on opportunities to learn, socialize and thrive. In fact, children in low- and middle-income countries with vision loss are 2 to 5 times less likely to be in school. Visit the new Seva Canada website to learn more.

In February’s newsletter, we wrote about our visit to the launch of “Through My Eyes: Art for Development”, an art exhibition reflecting on how the Sustainable Development Goals impact communities worldwide through 34 artworks of artists from Ghana, Malawi and Canada. It’s a lovely full-circle moment to share that the exhibition is now available for hosting by art galleries, academic institutions, NGOs, private entities and other interested organizations.
