In July 2024, CanWaCH’s Public Opinion Research Working Group (PORWG) commissioned Abacus Data to refresh its 2023 polling on Canadians’ views toward international development and Official Development Assistance (ODA). Building on the same questions from the previous year, the findings highlight what Canadians believe matters most and where they think their government should focus its efforts.
We are now accepting applications for next year’s Global Health Impact Summit! This year’s theme is: Data that speaks: Harnessing qualitative insights for global health and gender equality. The event will take place in Toronto, Ontario on May 6-7, 2025. The deadline for submissions is November 29, 2024. To foster an intimate learning environment, and given the sensitive nature of the projects being discussed, only those involved in presenting will be in attendance.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence is an annual international campaign that begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and goes until December 10, Human Rights Day. This year, the UNiTE campaign is drawing attention to the alarming escalation of violence against women under the theme, “Every 11 minutes, a woman is killed. #NoExcuse. UNiTE to End Violence against Women”. The Government of Canada’s theme for 2024 is Come Together, Act Now.
The Stephen Lewis Foundation has a new online resource, Hope in Action, highlighting community-led efforts to address gender-based violence and the HIV epidemic. It features short films from three community-led organizations in Tanzania, Botswana and Malawi that are working at the intersections of HIV and GBV and a panel discussion about their powerful work.
CanWaCH was pleased to attend the seventh OECD World Forum on Well-Being from November 4 to 6 in Rome, Italy. Bringing together experts, practitioners and thought leaders, the forum featured discussions on health, data and statistics, climate change, artificial intelligence and an overarching reflection on inequalities and poverty. It was encouraging to see speakers across sessions push all actors to move beyond simplistic measures such as GDP towards more holistic and meaningful measures of well-being.
Membership renewal notices and voting information for the AGM have been sent to all CanWaCH member organizations. Membership fees must be paid before the AGM for your organization’s votes to be valid. If you would like to request a financial accommodation waiver, or if you have any questions about your membership invoice or AGM voting access, please email us at [email protected].
