Last chance to register for the CanWaCH Annual General Meeting

This is your last chance to register for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, November 22! Starting at 1 p.m. EST, the AGM will feature key CanWaCH strategic and operational updates during the business meeting portion. It will be followed by a keynote address by Shweta Narayan that will consider the role of the global health community in protecting public health from climate change and shaping responses to the climate crisis.

Save the date! Healthy World Conference coming to Montreal in 2024

CanWaCH will host its 2024 flagship event, the CanWaCH Healthy World Conference, from May 14 to 15, 2024! Held on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka Nation, also known as Montreal, Quebec, the conference will aim to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian global health sector through climate-conscious, gender transformative action. Stay tuned for more information in our December newsletter! 

Renew your membership and cast your AGM votes

Membership renewal notices and voting information for the AGM have been sent to all CanWaCH member organizations. Membership fees must be paid before the AGM for your organization’s votes to be valid. Presenting the Power of Coalitions and new tools to advance gender equality together

The Equal Futures Network, a CanWaCH initiative, is excited to present a new report, the Power of Coalitions.  The report includes best practices for working in partnership to drive progress for gender equality, lessons learned and important tools and resources developed over the course of the project to strengthen and support your gender equality efforts.  

Members provide humanitarian update on critical situation in Gaza

Following a press conference on Parliament Hill last week, leading Canadian humanitarian organizations, including CanWaCH members Médecins du Monde Canada, Oxfam-Québec, Save the Children Canada, Islamic Relief Canada, CARE Canada, Humanité & Inclusion Canada and Human Concern International, shared a joint statement on the humanitarian emergency in Gaza. We’re thrilled to welcome Aura Freedom International, CAUSE Canada, Covenant House Vancouver, HelpAge Canada and Vitala Global Foundation to the CanWaCH membership! 

Aura Freedom is a grassroots feminist organization working to eradicate male violence against women and human trafficking through advocacy, education, research and survivor support. 

CAUSE Canada partners with hard-to-reach rural communities in Central America and West Africa to empower people living in extreme poverty to meet their basic health, education and livelihood needs.

Covenant House Vancouver is a trauma-informed agency that serves youth aged 16-24 who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing homelessness, trafficking or exploitation. 

HelpAge Canada supports community-based initiatives through its partnerships across Canada and abroad to improve the lives of older persons and their communities.

Vitala Global Foundation is a not for profit committed to co-creating digital solutions to support and facilitate self-managed abortion, contraception and miscarriage care with women, girls and gender diverse folks living in challenging contexts globally.

Upcoming sector moment: 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence is an annual international campaign that begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and goes until December 10, Human Rights Day. Let us know if you are planning any events or creating any resources to mark this year’s event. Fill out the survey by November 20.

Member spotlight: Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre

Over the past several years, global health leads at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre (BCCWH) have been working hand in hand with the hospital’s community, their affiliated research institutes and partners to reimagine the Centre for International Child Health at BC Children’s Hospital (2004-2023). The result is the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital (IGH-BCCWH), working across both children’s and women’s health and representing a shared vision, strategy and commitment to global health equity at the hospital campus.
